Step back in time as we repeat our first ever trip, celebrating 20 years in the bird tour business!

The Western Isles are one of Britain’s wildest places, home to some of our rarest birds, including Red-necked Phalarope, Black-throated Diver and half of Britain’s Corncrakes! This westernmost outpost of Britain also receives transatlantic vagrants such as American Coot, and is regularly visited by Arctic wanderers such as Gyr Falcon and Snowy Owl!

Flying from Birmingham to Benbecula with Flybe (to be confirmed once schedules are known) we arrive at The Isle of Benbecula House Hotel (3*), a refurbished old inn with a conservatory dining room enjoying wonderful views over the machair of Eilean Nighean nan Oran and the sandy beaches beyond. From our central base on Benbecula, we shall explore this remote and magical island chain, which is so rich in wildlife. Each island has a split personality with a rugged eastern half, covered in moorland dotted with lochans, and a gentler western side with dazzling white sandy beaches and grassland swathed with a profusion of wildflowers, known as Machair. This is a stronghold for Corncrakes, which will be calling feverishly around our hotel, while Short-eared Owls are regularly seen hunting from the conservatory! Other delights here include a wealth of breeding waders, like the very rare Red-necked Phalarope, plus true wild Greylags and Rock Doves, Corn Buntings, Seals and maybe an Otter. In the east, we shall search for Red- and Black-throated Divers, Whooper Swan, Golden and White-tailed Eagles, Hen Harrier, Red Grouse, Golden Plover, Arctic Skua and Twite. Offshore we can look out for Great Northern Diver, Eider, Red-breasted Merganser, Manx Shearwater, Gannet, Arctic and Little Terns and Black Guillemot. Our visit coincides not only with calling Corncrakes but also the migration of Great, Pomarine and Long-tailed Skuas, which annually pass along this wild west coast on their journey north.
As this adventure is limited to eight clients, an early booking is strongly recommended.
