Bardsey ~ Shearwater Island

Two glorious sunny days surrounded by blue sea with not a cloud in sight set the scene for a magical weekend break on Bardsey. Our visit coincided with a fall of Wheatears, Whitethroats, Willow Warblers, Chiffchaffs and Blackcaps in their dozens, plus a good number of passing Whimbrel. Overhead we had flyovers by Ravens, Choughs and a Peregrine Falcon.

Oystercatchers were everywhere and on the sea we watched Razorbills, Guillemots, Kittiwakes and up to fifty Grey Seals lazing in the bay within snorting distance. After dinner we trained our scopes on the five planets to the west with excellent views of Saturn's rings and Jupiter with four moons.

After dark we had Manx Shearwater in the hand! Standing under a clear starry sky, with powerful lighthouse beams radiating miles out to sea and the strange gurgling calls of shearwaters all around us was a surreal experience. This really is a treasure island.
