Exe Estuary ~ Avocet Cruise
This
was a dream weekend with so many highlights from
an impressive 85 total, seen during two days of
glorious autumn sunshine. Early sightings
included a fly over by hundreds of Fieldfares in
wave after wave. The morning river boat cruise
was 'Exe cellent' with four Spoonbills, some
lovely Shags, countless Little Egrets, up to 200
Avocets and thousands of Brent Geese and
waders.
The
afternoon proved equally rewarding with super
views of many Wigeon and Shoveller, plus a bonus
Barnacle Goose and even a Glossy Ibis! Sunday
treats included Buzzard, Cetti's Warbler, a
posing Kingfisher and two over wintering
Chiffchaffs, followed by a stunning aerial
display, over the mud of Bridgewater Bay, by
thousands of Knot and Dunlin flashing white in
tight formation, like shoals of Herring.
To
finish we had Hen Harrier and a superb Merlin on
a stick!
