The Danube Delta of Romania and the Black Sea coast of  Bulgaria are two of the top thirty birding sites in Europe, and this short break includes them both and coincides with the peak influx of Red-breasted Geese, when virtually the entire world population comes here in their tens of thousands from Arctic Russia! This spectacular assembly also includes White-fronted Geese and a few exceedingly rare Lesser Whitefronts, plus a large array of other waterfowl including Black-throated Diver, Black-necked Grebe, White and Dalmatian Pelicans, Pygmy Cormorant, Bewick’s and Whooper Swans, Red-crested Pochard, Ferruginous and White-headed Ducks and Smew. Other wetland birds include Bittern, Great Egret, Caspian Gull, Moustached Warbler and Bearded Tit. Even Pallas’s Gull from central Asia is possible, and offshore we may see Yelkouan Shearwater. Exploring the varied habitats of the hinterland, we should find an assortment of exciting birds like Black, Grey-headed, Syrian and Middle Spotted Woodpeckers, Calandra Larks in large flocks, plus Shore Lark, Sombre Tit, Short-toed Treecreeper, Great Grey Shrike, Brambling, Hawfinch and Corn Bunting. On top of all this there are also plenty of raptors such as White-tailed and Spotted Eagles, Marsh, Hen and even Pallid Harriers, Long-legged and Rough-legged Buzzards, Goshawk, Merlin, Saker Falcon and Long-eared and Eagle Owls, so prepare for an outstanding trip list.

We fly with Wizz Air from Luton to Constanta, where we meet our local English-speaking guide and driver, for a short transfer to the Grindul Lupilor Hotel, in Sinoe, not far from the Danube Delta. From here we have two days to explore the farmland, riverine  forests and lakes bordering the southern edge of the Danube Delta, before heading a short way south across the border into Bulgaria for two nights at the Nash Dom Guesthouse, with sea views, in the coastal town of Kavarna. During our stay here we shall explore the coastal lakes of Shabla and Durankulak where thousands of Red-breasted Geese gather to feed on the neighbouring farmland. At the end of this fabulous short break we drive to nearby Varna airport for the return flight home.
